It’s a tough, changing world we live in. And when your competition is already responding to this environment by working harder and longer, you need unique tools to separate yourself from the throng. Getting and keeping Mojo, that positive spirit toward what we are doing now that starts from the inside and radiates to the outside, will no longer be an option. It will become more and more of a requirement.

Here’s the good news: you’re still in control of your life and destiny. You have the power to create significant positive change. Which begs the question: What can you change?

The answer is simple: You can change either You or It.

Read this fascinating article by Dr. Marshall Goldsmith about getting and keeping Mojo!

WD-40. Who knew?

I had a neighbor who had bought a new pickup. I got up very early one Sunday morning and saw that someone had spray painted red all around the sides of this beige truck (for some unknown reason)..

I went over, woke him up, and told him the bad news. He was very upset and was trying to figure out what to do. Probably nothing until Monday morning, since nothing was open.

Another neighbor came out and told him to get his WD-40 and clean it off. It removed the unwanted paint beautifully and did not harm his paint job that was on the truck.

I’m impressed! WD-40 who knew? ’Water Displacement #40′ The product began from a search for a rust preventative solvent and degreaser to protect missile parts. WD-40 was created in 1953 by three technicians at the San Diego Rocket Chemical Company. Its name comes from the project that was to find a ‘water displacement’ compound. They were successful with the fortieth formulation, thus WD-40.. The Convair Company bought it in bulk to protect their atlas missile parts.

Ken East (one of the original founders) says there is nothing in WD-40 that would hurt you. When you read the ’shower door’ part, try it. It’s the first thing that has ever cleaned that spotty shower door. If yours is plastic, it works just as well as glass. It’s a miracle! Then try it on your stove top .. Voila! It’s now shinier than it’s ever been. You’ll be amazed.

Here are some other uses:

1. Protects silver from tarnishing..

2. Removes road tar and grime from cars.

3. Cleans and lubricates guitar strings.

4. Gives floors that ‘just-waxed’ sheen without making them slippery.

5. Keeps flies off cows.

6. Restores and cleans chalkboards.

7. Removes lipstick stains.

8. Loosens stubborn zippers..

9. Untangles jewelry chains.

10. Removes stains from stainless steel sinks.

11. Removes dirt and grime from the barbecue grill.

12. Keeps ceramic/terra cotta garden pots from oxidizing.

13. Removes tomato stains from clothing.

14. Keeps glass shower doors free of water spots .

15. Camouflages scratches in ceramic and marble floors.

16. Keeps scissors working smoothly.

17. Lubricates noisy door hinges on vehicles and doors in homes.

18. It removes black scuff marks from the kitchen floor! Use WD-40 for those nasty tar and scuff marks on flooring. It doesn’t seem to harm the finish and you won’t have to scrub nearly as hard to get them off. Just remember to open some windows if you have a lot of marks.

19. Bug guts will eat away the finish on your car if not removed quickly! Use WD-40!

20. Gives a children’s playground gym slide a shine for a super fast slide..

21. Lubricates gear shift and mower deck lever for ease of handling on riding mowers.

22. Rids kids rocking chairs and swings of squeaky noises.

23. Lubricates tracks in sticking home windows and makes them easier to open.

24. Spraying an umbrella stem makes it easier to open and close..

25. Restores and cleans padded leather dashboards in vehicles, as well as vinyl bumpers.

26. Restores and cleans roof racks on vehicles.

27. Lubricates and stops squeaks in electric fans..

28. Lubricates wheel sprocket s on tricycles, wagons, and bicycles for easy handling.

29. Lubricates fan belts on washers and dryers and keeps them running smoothly.

30. Keeps rust from forming on saws and saw blades, and other tools.

31. Removes splattered grease on stove.

32.. Keeps bathroom mirror from fogging.

33. Lubricates prosthetic limbs..

34. Keeps pigeons off the balcony (they hate the smell)..

35. Removes all traces of duct tape.

36. Folks even spray it on their arms, hands, and knees to relieve arthritis pain.

37. Florida favorite use is: ‘cleans and removes love bugs from grills and bumpers.

38. The favorite use in the state of New York, WD-40 protects the Statue of Liberty from the elements.

39. WD-40 attracts fish. Spray a little on live bait or lures and you will be catching the big one in no time. Also, it’s a lot cheaper than the chemical attractants that are made for just that purpose. Keep in mind though, using some chemical laced baits or lures for fishing are not allowed in some states.

40. Use it for fire ant bites. It takes the sting away immediately and stops the itch.

41. WD-40 is great for removing crayon from walls.. Spray on the mark and wipe with a clean rag.

42. Also, if you’ve discovered that your teenage daughter has washed and dried a tube of lipstick with a load of laundry, saturate the lipstick spots with WD-40 and re-wash. Presto! The lipstick is gone!

43. If you sprayed WD-40 on the distributor cap, it would displace the moisture and allow the car to start.

P.S. The basic ingredient is FISH OIL. Castrol doesn’t work.

One resource you might consider is Introduction to Type and Emotional Intelligence by Roger R. Pearman. This 54 page booklet is available through Consulting Psychologist’s Press at www.cpp.com. Though it’s not using the Genos Model of EI as a framework, it seems to provide some practical information for using MBTI type to develop emotional intelligence. It links the eight functions of psychological type (Introverted Sensing, Introverted Intuition, etc.) with emotional intelligence. It then goes on to look at each of the 16 MBTI types and provides three kinds of information on each:

Summaries of hallmark qualities

Descriptions of the nature of each type within the framework of EI

Descriptions of the challenges related to further development of EI for each type.

However I have turned to Gilles Gignac (our Director of Research and Development) for a more academic, research based answer to support our discussion:

“I’m not familiar with any decent research linking EI and the MBTI. I found one study that failed to identify any significant correlations, but the authors acknowledged that the way the MBTI is scored reduces the chances of finding correlations. Typically, in the personality space, it is the Neuroticism/Emotional Stability dimension that most significantly correlates with EI, in particular Emotional Self-Management and Emotional Self-Control type dimensions. However, the MBTI does not measure a dimension similar to Neuroticism/Emotional Stability. Consequently, I wouldn’t expect much in the way of substantial correlations between a proper EI inventory and the MBTI. Of course, the absence of correlations between the two does not mean the two inventories can not be used “synergistically” in an applied setting. In fact, in my opinion, the relative independence of the assessments suggests that both would offer unique information.”

Hope that helps – certainly provides some clarity for me, but supports using both concepts to compliment each other in the applied professional development context.

There is a science of emotional wealth; a science of perceiving, using, understanding, and managing your emotions. Like arithmetic or calculus, it is an exact science. There are laws that guide the process of getting smart with your emotions. Once mastered, these laws of emotion will guarantee you a place among that select group of people who behave with emotional intelligence and increase your emotional and financial wealth through right behavior.

The EASEQuadrant Code presents a program of integrated laws of emotion, which I call emotional wealth habits; the ability to do the right thing! The EASEQuadrant Code brings together more than 30 years of experience in the scientific fields of cognitive-affect-behavior (CBT) and emotional intelligence (EI). The program is a collaborative effort by my wife, Expert Professional Counselor Karen Gosling, and me that integrates theoretical aspects of the ability model of emotional intelligence[1] and cognitive-affect-behavior with our ‘hands on’ experience in the field. It is a process to get smart with your emotions, end emotional constipation and build trusting relationships to create the masterful life that you deserve and has always been waiting for you.

Emotional intelligence refers to an ability to recognize the meanings of emotions and their relationships and to reason and problem-solve effectively. It further involves employing emotions to enhance cognitive abilities. Emotional intelligence is the emotional knowledge and skills you are able to develop and nurture to make your relationships work.

Cognitive-affect-behavior is a discipline that can help you understand your behavior. It provides you with an opportunity to change your behaviors through actively participating in reframing cognitions that drive behavioral responses, reactions, feelings, or emotions.

Through clinical practice, workshops, and seminars over many years, Karen and I realized that people who are strong in emotional intelligence lead happier lives. And so we created The EASEQuadrant Code in 2002 with the goal to help others reach their potential through providing information, education, and empowerment.

Specifically, this leadership coaching program (book available in late 2010) will help you:

Explore the nature and potential of your emotional health.

Assess your emotional intelligence abilities and identify areas for development.

Understand your mood and emotional style, and generate empathy to build long-term trust in business, professional, and personal relationships.

Build emotional knowledge and self-awareness

Practise expressing emotion

Create opportunities for individual transition, and

Promote successful self and social management.

On completing this program you will be motivated to apply the ideas, techniques and wisdom in The EASEQuadrant Code training to empower yourself, enhance your health and raise your level of emotional happiness, trust, compassion, and forgiveness. These things will increase your joy of living, cause you to live longer, and encourage you to assist others in developing effective emotional wealth habits in the home, workplace and community.

Action steps:

1) Read my PDF on The EASEQuadrant Code

2) Learn more about the MSCEIT ability model of emotional intelligence.

We’re not done talking about The EASEQuadrant Code yet, because I’ve got some more introductory notes to reveal in the next lesson.

As always, you are welcome to post your questions and comments below
